Jarrel Lake scored 23 points Friday, and
Kelechi Okoroha
and
Alfred Williams had double-doubles to power Xavier University of Louisiana
to an 81-59 men's basketball victory against Webber International at The Barn.
The victory was the 17th in the past 20 games for Xavier (2-0), ranked 10th in
NAIA Division I. The Gold Rush will play NAIA No. 19 Wiley at 6 p.m. Saturday at The Barn.
Webber (1-3) lost its third straight and will stay in town to play Loyola at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Lake, who led the Gold Rush in scoring for the second consecutive game, also grabbed eight
rebounds and blocked three shots. Okoroha had 11 points and a career-high 12 rebounds,
and Williams had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Xavier point guard
Shaun Dumas had nine points and nine assists,
including six assists in the first 4:25 as the Rush rolled to a 17-0 lead.
Xavier, with
Olumide Olafioye scoring all 16 of his points in the first half,
led 42-28 at halftime.
Joe Kelly scored 15 points and Jermaine Miller 14 for Webber. Brandon Steeter
had eight points, six assists and four steals, and Igor Eglendzija grabbed
nine rebounds.
Webber twice cut Xavier's margin to eight points early in the second half.
Steeter's basket made it 46-38 with 15:50 remaining, but the Rush scored the next
15 points — six by Lake and five by Okoroha — to maintain a 20-point advantage
for the final 12 1/2 minutes.
Xavier outshot the Warriors 47 to 38 percent from the floor and outrebounded them 45-25.
