Dannie Woods scored a layup with
with 23 seconds remaining in overtime Friday to rally Xavier University of New
Orleans to an 82-79 men's basketball victory over Wiley at The Barn.
The Gold Rush, ranked 18th in NAIA Division I by Victory
Sports Network, outscored the Wildcats 9-3 in the final 94 seconds to erase a 76-73
deficit and give Wiley its third consecutive loss and second in as many nights.
Shaun Dumas passed to Woods for a basket and an 80-79
Xavier lead, then Dumas made two free throws with 11 seconds remaining.
Olumide Olafioye scored a season-high 22 points for Xavier,
which is 4-0 for the sixth consecutive season, and
Ryan DeRousselle had 16 points
and four 3-point field goals, both career highs.
Shaun Dumas scored a season-high
15 points, and Woods and
Kelechi Okoroha had 12 apiece.
LaMario Kersee scored 24 points for Wiley (2-4), and
Darnell Adams had 16. Jordan Alexander and Ronald Tolbert scored 11 apiece.
Wiley got 12 points from Adams, 11 from Kersee and shot
62 percent from the floor to build a 34-29 halftime lead. The Wildcats extended
their advantage to 42-31 with 17:18 remaining.
But Xavier rallied, and there were seven lead changes and
four ties during the final 12½ minutes of regulation. Jordan Alexander's 3-pointer
for Wiley with six seconds remaining tied the score at 70 and forced overtime.
The Gold Rush missed 17 free throws in the game but shot
65 percent from the floor after halftime to finish at 56.5 percent.
Okoroha grabbed 11 rebounds for his second consecutive
double-double, but Wiley had a 34-29 rebound advantage.
Xavier is 4-0 in overtime since the start of the
2006-07 season.
The Gold Rush will play Philander Smith at 6 p.m. Monday
at The Barn. Wiley will stay in town and play Dillard at 7 p.m. Saturday.
