SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico —
LaTashia Wise scored a
career-high 19 points Friday, and
Danielle Jones had a season-high-tying 10 to
lead NAIA No. 16 Xavier University of Louisiana to a 67-41 women's basketball
victory over Judson (Ill.) in the Paradise Jam.
It was the fifth consecutive victory for the Gold
Nuggets (8-1) and — for the first since 2005 — their fourth in a row by
double-digits.
Wise, reaching her career high for the second straight game,
scored 14 points in the first half and continued her torrid outside shooting. Wise
was 3-of-3 from 3-point range and is 10-of-14 this season. She was 21-of-103 from
behind the arc in her first two seasons.
Xavier, playing for the first time in 13 days,
scored the first 14 points and led 37-17 at halftime. The Nuggets gained 15
turnovers and limited the Eagles to 29-percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes.
Aubrey Parsons scored eight points for Judson (7-7), an NAIA
Division II member, and Lindsay Jordan had seven. The Eagles have dropped two in a
row after winning six of eight.
For the game Xavier outshot the Eagles 40 to 33 percent from
the floor and outrebounded them 46-37. But Judson's Alicia Rovertoni led all
players with 11 rebounds.
Brittany Powell grabbed seven for the Nuggets.
Xavier allowed its fewest points this season and matched
its second-best nine-game start. The Nuggets were 8-1 in 2004-05, and they were
9-0 in 1980-81.
Xavier will play its second and final Paradise Jam game
at 7 p.m. AST Saturday — 5 p.m. New Orleans time — against Olivet Nazarene.
