Mobile hands Gold Rush its fourth straight loss

Box Score      MOBILE, Ala. — Robert Jones outscored NAIA No. 13 Xavier University of Louisiana 5-0 in the final 3 1/2 minutes to rally Mobile to a 65-64 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference men's basketball victory Saturday.
Walter Fitzgerald led the Rams (19-8 overall, 13-3 GCAC) with 21 points. Olumide Olafioye scored 19 points for the Gold Rush (20-8, 10-6), which lost its fourth in a row.
Mobile rallied from a 10-point deficit to take a 35-27 halftime lead, and Jones' basket with 16:33 remaining gave Mobile its biggest lead, 43-30. Then Olafioye and Kelechi Okoroha combined for 24 points to rally Xavier, with the Rush taking a 64-60 lead at 3:42 on Okoroha's first 3-pointer of the season.
But Xavier was scoreless on its final five possessions. Jones' 3-point play at 2:28 cut Xavier's lead to 64-63, then Jones scored a layup at 1:35 to put Mobile ahead to stay.
Okoroha, who scored 15 points, missed two free throws with one second remaining.
Mobile has a four-game winning streak and has won seven straight at home.
Before Xavier's losing streak started Feb. 14, the Rush was tied for second place in the GCAC and one game behind the leader, LSU-Shreveport. Four losses later, the Rush has dropped to fourth place. The best news for Xavier on Saturday was William Carey's loss at Tougaloo, which assured Xavier a first-round bye in the conference tournament. Xavier can host its quarterfinal game on Wednesday, March 5 by holding on to fourth place in the final week of the regular season.
Xavier's next game will start at 7:30 p.m. Thursday against Loyola at The Barn. The Rush will close the regular season at 7 p.m. next Saturday at New Orleans Arena against Dillard in the Crosstown Classic presented by Siemens.
