Box Score NEW ORLEANS —
Mark Stewart scored 15 points Saturday to rally Xavier University of
Louisiana to a 51-43 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference men's basketball victory over
Dillard at New Orleans Arena in the Crosstown Classic presented by Siemens.
Alfred Williams had 13 points and nine rebounds for the Gold Rush (22-8 overall, 12-6 GCAC),
which trailed 19-17 at halftime and 29-26 with 9:48 remaining.
Stewart put Xavier ahead to stay at 35-34 when he made a pair of free throws at 5:39.
The senior guard — whose .844 career free-throw percentage is the best in school
history — was 9-of-9 from line.
Willie Sweat scored 10 points for Dillard (5-20, 1-17), and David Manning had eight
points and 10 rebounds.
Xavier beat Dillard for the sixth consecutive time and extended its winning streak against
its three GCAC city rivals — Dillard, Loyola and SUNO — to 18.
The Rush won despite being outshot 38 to 30 percent from the floor. Xavier outscored
the Blue Devils 19-6 from the line.
The game produced the second fewest points in the 115-game history of the series, which
began during the 1947-48 season. The lowest scoring game was Xavier's 46-40 victory during
the 1955-56 season. Xavier leads the series 69-46.
It was the final regular-season game for both teams. Xavier finished third in the GCAC
standings and earned the No. 3 seeding for the GCAC Tournament, which will begin Monday.
The Gold Rush has a first-round bye and will play sixth-seeded Loyola (16-12)
at The Barn at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the quarterfinals. Tenth-seeded Dillard will
visit seventh-seeded William Carey in a first-round game at 7 p.m. Monday.
