Box Score NEW ORLEANS —
Michael Harvey scored 21 points Saturday, including the first four of overtime, to rally Xavier University of Louisiana to a 72-67 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference men's basketball victory over Dillard in the Bleu Devil Classic at Lakefront Arena.
The victory was the second in a row for the Gold Rush (12-9 overall, 3-6 GCAC). Dillard (2-13, 0-9) has dropped nine straight.
Dillard led 56-51 and had possession with two minutes remaining, but Xavier rallied and tied the score at 60 when
Devin Andrew made a 3-pointer with 15.5 seconds remaining. Dillard missed 3-of-4 free throws in the final 37 seconds and missed twice from the floor on the final possession of regulation.
After Harvey scored the first four points of overtime, freshman teammate
Wanto Joseph accounted for the Gold Rush's final eight points — three baskets and an assist to
Jamaan Kenner for another basket.
Andrew recorded his first collegiate double, 17 points and a career-best 11 rebounds.
Donald Fondel scored 13 points, James Burkes 12 and Autrail Manning 11 for Dillard, which never led in overtime.
Dillard had a chance to force a second overtime when trailing 70-67, but Joseph stole Avry Ingram's inbounds pass in the backcourt after a Dillard timeout and scored a layup with 4.7 seconds remaining for the final points.
Joseph drove the middle of the lane for a layup and Xavier's biggest lead of overtime, 70-62.
Xavier made its final eight attempts from the floor — including all six in overtime — to finish at 47 percent for the game.
It was the first overtime victory of the season for the Gold Rush, which lost at home to Texas College in November and at Wiley in December in overtime.
Xavier leads the series with its city and HBCU rival 71-47 and has won eight of the past nine meetings, including three overtime victories.
Both teams will begin the second half of their GCAC schedules with 7:30 p.m. games Thursday. Xavier will travel to Spring Hill, and Dillard will play host to William Carey.
