Devin Andrew scored 15 of his season-high 20 points in the first half Thursday to lead NAIA No. 20 Xavier University of Louisiana to a 96-65 men's basketball victory over Jarvis Christian.
It was the eighth consecutive regular-season victory for the Gold Rush, which is 4-0 for the seventh time in eight seasons.
Andrew scored eight points in the first 3½ minutes and led Xavier to a 48-33 halftime advantage. Andrew, who played 18 minutes, finished 7-of-9 from the floor and made all three of his 3-pointers.
Three other Gold Rush players had season-high point totals.
Tyrone Allen and
Jeremy Lee scored 15 apiece, and
Kevin Miller had 10.
Sage Malone scored a season-high 18 points for Jarvis Christian (2-2). Also with season-highs for the Bulldogs were Brian Lockett with 14 points and Anthony Crump with 12.
Jarvis Christian pulled to within 49-39 in the first two minutes of the second half, but Xavier pulled away for good with a 13-3 run. The Gold Rush led by 20 or more for the final 11:37.
Xavier outshot the Bulldogs 59.6 to 37.7 percent from the floor and outrebounded them 35-24. Xavier made 34-of-50 free throws — Jarvis Christian was 18-of-28 — and both teams committed 28 turnovers.
Xavier will play Philander Smith for homecoming at 2 p.m. Saturday at The Barn. Jarvis Christian will stay in town and play SUNO at 7 p.m. Saturday.
