Gold Rush shoots past Rams for 3rd straight victory

Box Score      NEW ORLEANS — Michael Harvey made the most of his limited playing time Monday, scoring 12 points in 14 minutes to lead Xavier University of Louisiana to a 65-45 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference men's basketball victory over Mobile.
Harvey was 4-of-4 from 3-point range, making three in the first half, and helped the Gold Rush (17-12 overall, 8-9 GCAC) win its third in a row and clinch a winning record for the 10th consecutive season.
Freshman DeRonn Scott added 11 points — his second highest total of the season — and had four assists for Xavier, which remained in sixth place in the GCAC but extended its lead over idle Spring Hill and SUNO to one game. The GCAC's top six teams will receive first-round byes in next week's conference tournament.
Harvey's 3-pointer at 17:41 put the Gold Rush ahead to stay at 3-2, and 9-of-11 shooting in the first 12½ minutes gave Xavier a 24-9 lead. The Rush led 32-18 at halftime, and the 20-point margin at the end was its largest of the night.
Donte Walker, with 16 points, was the only double-figure scorer for Mobile (16-9, 9-7), which remained in fifth place. The loss was just the second in nine games for the Rams.
Xavier, No. 2 in NAIA Division I in field-goal percentage defense, limited Mobile to 35.6 percent. The Gold Rush shot 57.5 percent and topped 50 percent for the third time in four games.
Ryan DeRousselle had eight points, seven rebounds and three assists for Xavier.
Xavier has not finished with a losing record since 1989-90.
The Gold Rush will conclude its regular season at 7:30 p.m. Thursday against GCAC, city and HBCU rival SUNO at The Barn. It will be senior night for Xavier's DeRousselle, Landon Bussie and Dannie Woods.
