Box Score NEW ORLEANS — Elijah Jones made 3-of-4 free throws
in the final 30 seconds of overtime Monday to lift Talladega to a 93-90 men's
basketball victory against Xavier University of Louisiana in a matchup of ranked NAIA Division I teams.
The Tornadoes (18-2, 4-0 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference), ranked
eighth, won their eighth in a row and snapped the six-game win streak of the Gold Rush (15-5, 4-1), ranked 22nd.
Xavier's
Lucas Martin-Julien made 1-of-2 free throws with 42 seconds remaining
to tie the score at 90. Jones made 1-of-2 for a 91-90 Talladega advantage with 29 seconds to play.
Xavier's
Anthony Goode then missed a driving shot in the lane, and Talladega rebounded. Jones made
two free throws to complete the scoring with two seconds to play.
Both teams had five double-figure scorers. Brandon Peters scored 21 points,
Charles Winborne 19, Roman Vaughn 18, Shondel Stewart 15 and Jones 14 for Talladega. For Xavier,
Anthony Goode scored a season-high 25 points,
Xavier Rogers 16 and
Sydney Coleman 14. Martin-Julien and RJ
Daniels scored 11 points apiece.
Stewart scored 15 points and Peters 12 to help Talladega take a 46-38 halftime
lead. The Gold Rush trailed by five with 39 seconds in regulation but forced overtime on Rogers' 4-point play with 14 seconds to play.
Talladega outshot Xavier 50 to 39.1 percent from the floor. Coleman and Daniels
grabbed eight rebounds apiece to help the Rush earn a 37-34 advantage.
Xavier's next game will start at 7 p.m. Saturday against longtime rival
Dillard in the Crosstown Classic at XU's Convocation Center.
