NEW ORLEANS — In the illustrious history
of Xavier University of Louisiana men's basketball, only five have averaged 20-or-more
points per game in a season. Juan Mercier was the most recent, in 1987-88.
Through two games this season,
Rayshawn Mart
appears capable of becoming the sixth. The senior guard produced 26 points — the second
straight game he topped 25 — to lead NAIA No. 20 XULA to a 76-63 victory Monday against William Carey.
Mart, a 6-foot-3 senior guard, is the only XULA
player in the last 16 seasons with back-to-back performances of 25-or-more points. He also accomplished that last season.
The last XULA player other than Mart with back-to-back 25s is Timothy Green, who
as a junior scored 26 against Arkansas Baptist and 29 against Clark Atlanta in November 2003.
