NEW ORLEANS —
Ed Carter
set a Xavier University of Louisiana men's basketball record for 3-point
accuracy in a game, and the junior guard made four consecutive treys
during a second-half run that sparked the Gold Rush to an 80-59
Gulf Coast Athletic Conference victory against Rust.
The Gold Rush (18-4, 6-0) have an eight-game
win streak and 14 victories in the last 15 games.
XULA trailed 42-32 at halftime, but Carter's
outside shooting led a decisive 35-2 surge during the first 11 1/2 minutes of the
second half. The Gold Rush closed that run with 21 consecutive points.
Carter, who scored a game- and season-high 22 points, finished 7-of-7 on 3-pointers
to surpass the previous XULA best of 5-of-5 by Juan Mercier
against Belhaven on Jan. 23, 1988, at The Barn.
Rayshawn Mart had 19 points, nine rebounds and four assists for
the Gold Rush,
William Loyd had 13 points, six rebounds and a career-high six assists,
and
Makye Richard had 11 points, 11 rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
XULA will compete a four-game home stand with a 7:30 p.m.
Monday matchup against GCAC rival Philander Smith.
