LAFAYETTE, La. — Freshman guard Lanay Wheaton scored 18 points Wednesday to lead Louisiana-Lafayette in a 76-27 women's basketball victory against Xavier University of Louisiana.
NAIA member XULA counted the game as an exhibition, but the Ragin' Cajuns of NCAA Division I did not, stretched their win streak to four and improved their season record to 6-1.
Nia Bishop scored 12 points for XULA, and Victory Udechi had six points, six rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Bishop has led XULA in scoring in every game this season, including two exhibitions.
Ty'Reona Doucet had 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Cajuns, and Makayia Hallman scored 11. Wheaton and Doucet were a combined 13-of-17 from the floor.
XULA led 3-2 in the fourth minute, then the Cajuns pulled away with a 20-2 run. The Cajuns led 35-13 at halftime and outscored XULA 22-1 in the fourth quarter. LaMonica Plater made 1-of-2 free throws with 57 seconds remaining to prevent a final-quarter shutout.
The Cajuns outshot the Gold Nuggets 53.7 to 21.3 percent from the floor and outrebounded them 35-30. The Cajuns committed 17 turnovers and gained 30, including 16 steals.
The Gold Nuggets — 5-3 in the regular season — will play William Carey at 5:30 p.m. Monday at XULA's Convocation Center. It will be XULA's final game before semester exams.
