Frederick strikes out 12 to lead XULA in opener at Lane

JACKSON, Tenn. — Blair Frederick struck out a season-high 12 batters, and Antonio Rodriguez and Co Co Simoneaux hit home runs in Xavier University of Louisiana's 4-1 baseball victory against Lane in the first game of a doubleheader Tuesday.
Frederick worked all seven innings, allowing three hits and walking four. His first-inning wild pitch scored Chris O'Neal from third with the first run, but XULA (23-6) responded with a run in the second inning, two in the third and one in the fourth.
Jonathan Santos walked with the bases loaded to tie the score, then XULA took the lead for good in the third on Rodriguez's home run and a two-out infield error that scored Tristan Rodriguez. Simoneaux followed in the fourth with another bases-empty homer.
Lane (8-17) stranded runners in each of the last four innings, two apiece in the fifth and seventh. Frederick struck out pinch-hitter Pharoah Smith to end the game with runners on second and third.
Simoneaux had two of XULA's six hits. Tristan Rodriguez, Danny Coleman and Dillon Cousin walked two times apiece.
XULA improved its winning streak to four and won for the 12th time in 16 road games this season.
