MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Bluefield State
took advantage of six consecutive walks in a six-run first-inning Saturday in a 7-2
victory against Xavier University of Louisiana in the championship game of
the Black College World Series at Riverwalk Stadium.
XULA forced a winner-take-all game
earlier in the afternoon of the double-elimination baseball tournament with a
16-2
victory that was called after seven innings because of the 10-run rule.
The consecutive walks occurred with
one out and gave Bluefield State (15-12) a 3-0 lead.
After a bases-loaded groundout produced the fourth run, Shane Reviello
made it 6-0 when he singled home Caden Carpenter and Noah Wootten.
Jamal Allen, who entered after
starter
Anthony Dumas walked five in a row, settled down and produced 1-2-3 innings
in the sixth and seventh. Allen worked the final 7 2/3 innings.
Danny Coleman in the second inning
singled home XULA's first run, and
Austin Anderson in the fifth singled
home
Courtland Posey with the second run.
Bluefield State's Austin Stambaugh pitched a complete game.
He allowed five hits, walked five and struck out seven.
XULA finished 3-2 in the tournament,
which had a mix of NAIA and NCAA Division II teams. Also competing were Savannah State,
Rust, Edward Waters and Florida Memorial. XULA was the No. 1 seed, and Bluefield State was No. 3.
Next for XULA (26-9) will be another double-elimination
event: the Association of Independent Institutions Championship at
Lawrenceville, Ga. XULA is seeded third out of five teams and will play second-seeded
Fisher at 3 p.m. EDT next Saturday. The A.I.I. champion will earn an automatic
bid to the NAIA nationals opening round May 17-20.
XULA had been announced Thursday as the A.I.I.
No. 4 seed, but new seedings announced Friday had XULA and Talladega swapping places in the bracket.
