Both teams staged comebacks. William Woods produced the decisive one.
The Owls trailed
Xavier University of Louisiana 5-0 in the fifth set before rallying
to complete a 25-23, 25-23, 23-25, 13-25, 15-12 women's volleyball victory Saturday
at the Grand View Tournament.
The Gold Nuggets
finished 0-3 in the tournament after entering with a 15-2 record and a 14-match win streak.
Next for XULA will be Red River Athletic Conference matches against
Our Lady of the Lake at the University of New Orleans Human Performance
Center: 7 p.m. Oct. 22 and noon Oct. 23. XULA and OLLU, which shared
the RRAC regular-season championship last year, are both 10-0 in the league
this season.
Maya Smith's kill gave XULA
its 5-0 fifth-set lead, but the Owls scored nine of the next 10 points and
didn't lose that lead. It was 13-12 after a
Stella Dineva kill, but William Woods
clinched with kills by Ella Lewis and Rhakala Blackmon.
XULA trailed 15-13 in the third set,
but
Kennedy Wade had four kills and Dineva three to extend the match.
Kassidy Phillips had 10 kills, eight digs
and two blocks for William Woods (9-14). Reanna Dodge had eight kills, two blocks and
hit .316, and Lauren Adams had six kills and nine blocks.
XULA produced a school-record-tying 73 kills.
Wade had 19 kills and 18 digs,
Taylor McGee had 15 kills, two blocks and
hit .444,
Angela Egonu had 14 kills, two aces and eight digs, and Dineva had 11 kills.
Linda Mungai had 16 digs, and both XULA setters produced double-doubles —
Emi Riglioni with 29 assists and 11 digs and
Charity Metcalf with 27 assists and 12 digs.
XULA lost despite
23 more kills than the Owls and outhitting them .232 to .185.
William Woods, however, committed 30 total errors to XULA's 47.
