LAKELAND, Fla. — Angelo Johnson led a second-half run Saturday that rallied fourth-ranked Arizona Christian to a 75-63 men's basketball victory against Xavier University of Louisiana in the second round of NAIA nationals.
XULA took its final lead, 44-43, on a
TJ Jones basket with 11:59 remaining, but Johnson scored 10 points during a 21-9 run during the next 8:43 to clinch the victory and advance Arizona Christian to the round of 16 next week in Kansas City, Mo.
Johnson, 6-of-9 from the floor and 3-of-4 on 3-pointers, led the Firestorm with 16 points.
Makye Richard, in his final game for XULA, had 18 points, five rebounds and four assists.
Nigel Allen scored 13 points, and
Cameron Wells had 10.
XULA outscored Arizona Christian 17-5 in the final 6 1/2 minutes of the first half to take a 33-29 lead at the break, then extended the lead to nine when Richard scored the first five points of the second half.
The Gold Rush struggled with free throws all season — XULA entered nationals at around 60 percent as a team — but was 9-of-9 against the Firestorm. Allen made all five of his attempts.
The Gold Rush — a qualifier for nationals for the third straight year and the 14th time in the last 18 attempts — finished 23-7. Arizona Christian is 29-4. XULA was attempting to win twice at nationals in the same season for the first time since 1973.
