2022 opener: Gold Nuggets lose 15-11 to Rams in fifth set

        MARIETTA, Ga. — Columbia International opened the final two sets with big runs to earn a 25-23, 17-25, 20-25, 25-18, 15-11 women's volleyball victory Friday against Xavier University of Louisiana in Life University's Running Eagles Classic.
        It was XULA's season opener.
        The Rams (2-4) rallied past the Gold Nuggets after a 10-1 start in the fourth set and an 8-2 start in the fifth.
        Kennedy Wade had 19 kills, 11 digs, two aces and three blocks for XULA, and freshman Sydney Murray has outstanding in her debut: 20 kills, nine digs, one ace and five blocks. Linda Mungai had a career-best 30 digs. Maya Smith and Kendall Mack had seven blocks apiece to help XULA finish with 15, one less than its school record.
        Both XULA and CIU qualified for NAIA nationals last season. CIU received votes in the 2022 preseason coaches poll. It was the schools' first volleyball meeting.
        This was the first of two opening-day matches for XULA, which was scheduled to play Life at 5 p.m. EDT.
