Meyer aces exam, ties XULA record in victory against Lady Steers

NEW ORLEANS — Maddie Meyer tied a Xavier University of Louisiana women's volleyball match record with nine aces Saturday in a 25-4, 25-9, 25-8 victory against Texas College in the opener of a Red River Athletic Conference doubleheader.
"I don't get to play a lot," said Meyer, a junior defensive specialist in her third season at XULA, "so I try to make the most of my time on the floor."
Mission accomplished. Meyer served six aces, five in a row, during a 15-0 first-set run. Meyer served her last three aces in the third set, including match point to tie the XULA record that Taylor Reuther set in 2012 and Kayla Black equaled in 2019.
Right behind Meyer was Semira Blair, who finished with eight aces. Blair served seven aces in the third set, including six in a row to give the Gold Nuggets a 15-1 lead.
XULA produced a school-record 24 aces, two more than its previous team mark against Tougaloo in 2010. The other contributors to the record were Sydney Murray and Angela Egonu with two aces apiece and Emi Riglioni, Linda Mungai and Sydney Hoosier with one apiece.
XULA outhit the Lady Steers .476 to minus-.071. Kennedy Wade hit .571 with nine kills for the Gold Nuggets, and Egonu hit .750 with seven kills.
Meyer's backrow success wasn't limited to aces. She also produced a match- and career-high nine digs.
