       NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana defeated Louisiana Christian and Mobile to win its Big Easy Blastoff women's volleyball tournament Saturday.
       The Gold Nuggets beat Louisiana Christian 25-14, 25-14, 25-20 and Mobile 25-15, 17-25, 25-23, 25-14. Mobile defeated Louisiana Christian 25-21, 25-17, 25-17 in the other match.

Sydney Murray and
Stella Dineva had 10 kills apiece,
Maya Smith had nine kills and six blocks, and
Linda Mungai had 23 digs for XULA against Mobile. XULA trailed 23-20 in the third set.
       Against Louisiana Christian, Dineva and
Kennedy Wade produced nine kills apiece,
Emi Riglioni served four aces, and Mungai had 19 digs.
       In the Mobile-LCU match, Corrina Porch-Maxey had nine kills and hit .400 for the Rams, and Abby Andrews and Jordan Wood had seven kills apiece. Aniah Adams had a match-high 11 kills for the Wildcats.
       For the season XULA is 4-2, Mobile is 6-4, and Louisiana Christian is 0-2.
       Matches were played at the University of New Orleans Human Performance Center because of August water damage to parts of the playing surface at XULA's Convocation Center. XULA's next home event, a Red River Conference doubleheader Sept. 17 against Texas College, also will be played at UNO.
       Next for the Gold Nuggets will be their Red River Athletic Conference opener at the University of the Southwest in Hobbs, N.M. — 6 p.m. MDT Friday, then 11 a.m. MDT Saturday. A year ago XULA shared the RRAC regular-season title and won the RRAC Tournament in its first season in the conference.
