PANAMA CITY, Fla. — NAIA No. 22 Xavier University of Louisiana rallied Tuesday for an 83-75 men's basketball victory against Warner in the final game of the Battle at The Beach.
TJ Jones scored 22 points, and Lance Williams scored a season-high 20 to help the Gold Rush (4-1) earn a split of two games in the eight-team, two-day event.
XULA led 19-7 in the seventh minute, but the Royals (2-4) rallied to take a 46-43 halftime lead. Jeremy Lindsey made the first of two free throws with 10:14 remaining to put the Gold Rush ahead to stay at 62-61, and Williams' 2-of-2 free throws at 9:01 made it 66-61. Thereafter XULA never led by less than four points.
Lindsey scored a season-high-tying 14 points. Teammate Corey Dunning grabbed a season-high six rebounds. Williams tied his career best by making 9-of-10 free throws.
XULA was stellar at the free-throw line — 30 attempts, 24 makes and the success rate of 80 percent all were season highs.
Blaize Darling and Christian Nurse scored 18 points apiece for Warner, which dropped its fourth straight. Nurse grabbed 10 rebounds.
XULA will break for Thanksgiving, then visit Southwest (N.M.) Nov. 30 — one week from Thursday — in the Red River Athletic Conference opener for both teams. Tip-off will be 7:30 p.m. MST. The next Gold Rush home game will start at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 14 against Texas College at the Convocation Center.
