Wells' 3-pointer puts Gold Rush ahead to stay in 77-75 victory

        HOBBS, N.M. — Cory Wells' 3-pointer with 33 seconds remaining — his only score of the second half — put Xavier University of Louisiana ahead to stay Thursday in a 77-75 men's basketball victory against University of the Southwest.
        It was the Red River Athletic Conference opener for both teams. The Gold Rush, 5-1 and ranked 22nd in the NAIA, will stay on the road and play Paul Quinn in Dallas in an RRAC game at 4 p.m. Saturday.
        XULA trailed 71-66 with 1:43 remaining, then outscored the Mustangs 11-4 thereafter.
        Wells entered the game 27-of-102 on 3s during his XULA career, 2-of-12 this season. The 6-foot-7 senior made a pair of 3s against Southwest and finished with 14 points.
        Jeremy Lindsey scored a season-high 19 points, 12 in the second half, for XULA, and Lance Williams scored 18.
        Anthony Scott scored 16 points, Mojus Mojus 15, Chris Wiseman 11 and Oreon Courtney 10 for the Mustangs (3-3).
