Xavier University of Louisiana led for nearly 17 minutes, all in the first half,
before losing 70-62 Wednesday to NCAA Division I Alcorn State.
The Gold Rush, 2-0 and
ranked 22nd in the NAIA,
played the game
as an exhibition, but the Braves (1-1) counted it in their records and statistics.
Lance Williams' pull-up 3-pointer at 4:41
of the first half gave XULA its largest lead, 27-20. But Alcorn scored 11 of the next
13 points and led 31-29 at halftime. XULA never led in the second half, but there were
ties at 42 and 46.
Jeremiah Kendall's basket with 10:08 put Alcorn
ahead to stay at 48-46.
Williams scored 16 points, and three teammates
reached double-figure points.
Jathen Ross scored 15,
Jeremy Lindsey 12 and
Cory Wells 10.
Ross made 5-of-8 3-pointers, and Wells grabbed eight rebounds.
Joshua Byron scored 22 points and Kendall 21 for Alcorn., and Kendall and
Stephen Byard grabbed nine rebounds apiece. Alcorn's fourth-year head coach is Landon Bussie,
a XULA graduate, former player and coach.
The Gold Rush will play city rival Loyola at 7:30 p.m. Monday
in XULA's Convocation Center. It will be a doubleheader; the XULA women
will play NAIA No. 15 Loyola at 5:30 p.m.
