TEXARKANA, Texas — Louisiana Christian scored twice within 10 minutes of the first half, and that's all the Wildcats needed Thursday evening in a 2-0 men's soccer victory against Xavier University of Louisiana in the semifinals of the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament.
The Wildcats, 12-3-4 and seeded second, advanced to a 3:30 p.m. Saturday championship match against top-seeded defending champion LSU-Shreveport, a 2-0 winner against fifth-seeded Jarvis Christian in the first semifinal.
XULA — 11-4-2 and a first-year varsity program that received votes in two of the final three NAIA coaches polls of the regular season — will learn Monday if it received an at-large bid to nationals.
LCU got goals from Shakeem Walters in the 27th minute and Adrian Amoros Navarro in the 37th.
Both teams produced seven shots, four of them on goal. XULA had a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks — all the Gold Rush corners occurred in the second half.
It was the fourth consecutive game that XULA's offense did not score. The Gold Rush benefited from an own-goal in a 1-0 victory against LSU-Alexandria in the first round of the RRAC Tournament.
