NEW ORLEANS — Texas College pulled away late for a 66-56 Red River Athletic Conference men's basketball victory Thursday against NAIA No. 21 Xavier University of Louisiana at the Convocation Center.
The Steers (7-4 overall, 3-2 RRAC) trailed 48-46 through 31 minutes, then clinched by outscoring the Gold Rush 16-5 in the next six minutes.
Qyrique Dabon scored 14 points, Nagee Jones 13 and Tylor Harris 10 for Texas College, which beat the Gold Rush at XULA for the first time in 14 years. The Steers limited XULA to its lowest point total at home since February 2021.
Cory Wells had game highs of 15 points and eight rebounds for XULA (6-2, 2-1) but also committed eight turnovers.
Jeremy Lindsey scored 12 points.
Texas College led 13-2 through 5 1/2 minutes and 33-31 at halftime. XULA led twice by three points in the second half, the last at 43-40 on a
Lance Williams 3-pointer with 13:08 remaining.
Texas College made 17-of-23 free throws to XULA's 5-of-11.
XULA will play host to RRAC opponent Jarvis Christian at 4 p.m. Saturday. The Bulldogs suffered their first league loss Thursday, an 80-71 decision at North American. Fourth-ranked LSU-Shreveport, a 108-99 winner at Our Lady of the Lake, is the only team unbeaten in RRAC games. The Pilots are 3-0 (8-0 overall).
