NEW ORLEANS —
Xavier University of Louisiana men's basketball, a double-digit loser
at home two days earlier, bounced back Saturday with an 81-57
Red River Athletic Conference victory against Jarvis Christian at the Convocation Center.
It was the final game
of the month for the Gold Rush, 7-2 overall and tied for second in the RRAC at 3-1.
XULA is 4-0 on Saturdays this season, and all those victories are
by 15-or-more points.
XULA led wire-to-wire
and outscored the Bulldogs 15-2 in the first six minutes. It was 42-29
at halftime and 71-43 — the largest Gold Rush lead —
when
Tracy Steele made a 3-pointer with 7:19 remaining.
Cory Wells scored 17 points,
Steele and
TJ Jones had 14 apiece, and
Jeremy Lindsey scored 11 for XULA.
Reserve forward
Justice Kelly grabbed a career-high nine rebounds in 16 minutes.
James Phillip Russell had 12 points,
six rebounds and two steals for Jarvis Christian (6-4, 4-2), and Erin Wright scored 11.
It was the Bulldogs' second consecutive RRAC loss.
XULA outshot the Bulldogs 50 to
35.2 percent from the floor and outrebounded them 38-33.
The Gold Rush made a season-high-tying 10 3-pointers —
Steele was 4-for-4, Jones 2-for-2 — and produced a season-high 18 assists,
four apiece by Lindsey and Jones.
The Gold Rush will break for
Christmas, then return to the court Jan. 4 at 7:30 p.m. against
RRAC opponent Huston-Tillotson at Austin, Texas.
The next Gold Rush home game will tip off at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 11
against RRAC opponent LSU-Alexandria at the Convocation Center.
