ALEXANDRIA, La. — Xavier University of Louisiana's Jathen Ross broke his school record for 3-pointers in a game, this time making 10 Friday morning in a 94-59 men's basketball victory against Southwest (N.M.) in the quarterfinals of the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament at Rapides Parish Coliseum.
Ross, a sophomore guard from Bossier City, La., was 9-of-9 on 3s in the first 30 minutes. He broke his previous XULA record of nine 3s in a 91-61 home victory Feb. 4 against Huston-Tillotson.
The Gold Rush (20-8), seeded third, will play in the semifinals against second-seeded Texas A&M-Texarkana or seventh-seeded Our Lady of the Lake at 1 p.m. Saturday. The championship game will tip off at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Ross scored a career-high 30 points, and teammate Lance Williams scored 15. Corey Dunning grabbed nine rebounds, and Brian White had six assists.
Jahvonta Jones scored 19 points and Tre Thomas 13 for the Mustangs (12-16), who were seeded sixth.
XULA outshot Southwest 51.5 to 36.5 percent from the floor. The Gold Rush made 15-of-24 3-pointers.
It was the fourth time in the last 18 seasons that a XULA men's basketball game tipped off in the morning. XULA and Southwest tipped off shortly before 10 a.m. CST and after fifth-seeded Louisiana Christian's 73-50 victory against fourth-seeded LSU-Alexandria in the first quarterfinal.
