2nd-half goal gives NAIA No. 9 William Carey 1-0 victory in Gold Rush regular-season debut

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Jamie Wynne's goal in the 74th minute Tuesday gave NAIA No. 9 William Carey a 1-0 victory in the regular-season debut of Xavier University of Louisiana men's soccer.
XULA — the first New Orleans varsity men's team since the University of New Orleans dropped its program after the 1985 season — launched with plug-and-play skill against a program that won 84 percent of its games the previous seven seasons.
But a 54th-minute red card on Eduardo dos Santos forced the Gold Rush to play a man down thereafter, and Wynne and the Crusaders (2-1-1) eventually capitalized.
"It's heads up, continue working," XULA head coach Gonzalo Carranza said. "I hope I don't sound too positive. This isn't good enough. We want big things."
William Carey head coach Barry Farrell said XULA can reach those big things soon.
"Xavier, a first-year program, playing us here, has got to be proud of themselves," Farrell said. "They're a well-coached team. We knew they were going to be super-competitive. They brought in a lot of experienced transfers. They're going to do fantastic in the Red River (Athletic Conference). We've played a lot of Red River teams in the past, and (Xavier) is right up there."
Breno Zanolla, XULA's 6-foot-3 sophomore goalkeeper, faced 15 shots, four on goal, and had three saves.
"Breno did a fantastic job with his hands and his feet," Carranza said. "The one-zero is also due to him."
The winning goalkeeper was Andreas Kokoska, who faced seven shots — two apiece by Victor Ferraz and Leonardo Menzen — and had three saves.
Both XULA teams will travel to Mobile, Ala., to play NCAA Division II Spring Hill Sept. 6 — women's game at 1 p.m., men at 3:30.
