METAIRIE, La. — Xavier University of Louisiana men's soccer defeated LSU-Shreveport 3-0 Thursday at Lafreniere Park — the fourth consecutive XULA shutout victory, all in the Red River Athletic Conference.
The victory was the fifth in a row overall for the Gold Rush (5-1 overall, 4-0 RRAC). XULA is unbeaten in September since opening its first regular season with a 1-0 loss Aug. 29 at William Carey — ranked ninth at that time in the NAIA coaches poll but now seventh.
XULA and Louisiana Christian share first place in the RRAC. Four teams have one loss.
XULA will return to Lafreniere for a 7:30 p.m. Saturday RRAC matchup with Texas A&M-Texarkana.
The Gold Rush led 2-0 at halftime after
Sebastian Pinto's goal in the 22nd minute and
Gustavo Oliveira's goal in the 39th minute.
Nicolas Kuwae scored the final goal in the 85th minute.
Assisting on the goals were, in order,
Julio Gruba,
Leonardo Menzen and
Anthony Williams.
Breno Zanolla was the winning goalkeeper.
Joining Gruba, Menzen, Oliveira, Pinto and Zanolla in XULA's starting lineup were
Ignacio Solorza,
Caio Tascheto,
Juan Braz,
Eduardo dos Santos,
Fabricio Reis and
Caleb Evans.
The losing margin was the largest for LSUS in a shutout against an RRAC opponent since reviving its men's soccer program in 2017. The Pilots (5-4-1, 3-2) were the RRAC Tournament champion a year ago.
XULA, College of Idaho, Concordia (Neb.), Evangel, Harris-Stowe, Marian (Ind.) and St. Thomas (Fla.) are the only NAIA teams this season to produce four consecutive shutout victories. No one has reached five.
