Gold Rush grab 3rd in RRAC after defeating Mustangs

        NEW ORLEANS — TJ Jones scored 20 second-half points Thursday and finished with 26 to lead Xavier University of Louisiana in a 75-65 Red River Athletic Conference men's basketball victory against the University of the Southwest.
        The Gold Rush (13-4 overall, 9-3 RRAC) moved into third place in the RRAC and are a game behind LSU-Alexandria, which maintained its lead after a 103-98 home victory against NAIA No. 12 LSU-Shreveport.
        Jones — a 5-foot-8 fifth-year starter — was 8-of-9 from the floor in the second half. His game totals included six assists and two steals.
        Four of XULA's starters scored in double figures. Cory Wells had 13 points, Lance Williams 12 and J'Quan Ewing 10. Ewing grabbed 12 rebounds in his third consecutive double-double. Williams grabbed eight rebounds, and Wells and Kaleb Huggins had seven apiece.
        Anthony Scott scored 17 points, Mojus Mojus 16 and Montrez Ward 14 for the Mustangs (9-11, 5-8). Scott made four 3-pointers and had six assists, and Johnny DeWalt grabbed nine rebounds.
        XULA led 35-24 at halftime en route to its first Thursday RRAC home victory in three attempts this season.
        XULA shot 50 percent from the floor for the second consecutive game and limited Southwest to 32.3 percent. The Gold Rush were plus-11 in rebounds (45-34).
        The Gold Rush will play host to RRAC opponent Paul Quinn at 4 p.m. Saturday in XULA's Convocation Center. It will be a doubleheader; the women of XULA and Paul Quinn will meet at 2 p.m.
