Gold Rush rallies late to defeat Tigers

NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana rallied in the final six minutes Saturday for a 69-65 Red River Athletic Conference men's basketball victory against Paul Quinn.
The Gold Rush (14-4 overall, 10-3 RRAC) remained in third place in the RRAC and a game behind LSU-Alexandria, which maintained its lead after an 87-73 home victory against Texas A&M-Texarkana. Between the Generals and the Gold Rush is Texas College, which will play host to XULA at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
The Tigers (5-11, 5-9) trailed 23-12 during the 12th minute but led 59-55 when Jason Thirdkill made two free throws with 5:50 remaining. Then XULA clinched with a 12-1 run during the next 4:39; two TJ Jones free throws with 3:31 remaining broke a tie at 60 and put the Gold Rush ahead to stay.
Jeremy Lindsey scored 17 points, J'Quan Ewing 16 — that tied his season high — and Cory Wells 10 for XULA. Ewing was 7-of-7 from the floor and grabbed 13 rebounds to become the first Gold Rush player in the last 20 seasons with four consecutive double-doubles. A 6-foot-9 second-semester transfer from NCAA Division I Southern University, Ewing has no turnovers during his streak.
Lindsey produced five rebounds, three assists, three steals and a block, and Wells had seven rebounds, six assists and four blocks.
Paul Quinn used only six players, and four starters scored in double figures. Norris Williams and John Harrison scored 15 points apiece, Josh Favors had 11, abd Richard Lemboye had 10. Thirdkill grabbed 13 rebounds. Williams is a 6-2 junior guard from New Orleans and a 2019 graduate of Archbishop Hannan High School in suburban Covington, La.
XULA led 34-32 at halftime despite no free-throw attempts, then went 6-of-17 from the line in the second half.
