Gold Rush win 3rd straight, 5th in last 6 games

2024 Red River Athletic Conference men's soccer standings

METAIRIE, La. — Xavier University of Louisiana men's soccer extended its win streak to three games with a 4-2 Red River Athletic Conference victory Saturday against Jarvis Christian.
Senior-day honorees Gustavo Oliveira and Leonardo Menzen scored to give the Gold Rush a 2-0 halftime lead, then Artur Rubim tacked on goals in the 78th and 86th minutes — Rubim's first goals for XULA — to make it 4-0.
Daniel Sierra scored twice in the final two minutes for the Bulldogs — that ended XULA's bid for a sixth consecutive home shutout victory. Nevertheless the Gold Rush improved to 10-1 at home with a 31-5 advantage in goals in two varsity seasons .
XULA is 6-3-1 overall, 5-2 in the RRAC and has five victories in its last six games. Jarvis Christian, 0-3-1 in its last four games, is 3-7-2 overall and 2-4-1 in conference.
Breno Zanolla made four saves and has been the goalkeeper of record in every XULA game this season. Zanolla survived four Bulldog scoring attempts during the second half — David Torres' penalty kick hit the top of the cage in the 52nd minute, then Torres hit the right post a minute later and in the 67th minute. The Bulldogs were wide left on a point-blank header in the 83rd minute.
The Gold Rush scored four-or-more goals for the third consecutive game. In its debut season XULA reached four goals only once.
Oliveira's goal was his 22nd in 23 career XULA games.
XULA's other senior honoree was Julio Gruba. Like Oliveira and Menzen, Gruba is a two-year starter.
The Gold Rush will play RRAC opponent Our Lady of the Lake at 1:30 p.m. Thursday to continue a four-game home stand.
