Gold Nuggets win 2-1, advance to RRAC Tournament final

2024 Red River Athletic Conference women's soccer tournament

TEXARKANA, Texas — Third-seeded Xavier University of Louisiana scored the first two goals, then held on for a 2-1 women's soccer victory Tuesday against second-seeded Louisiana Christian in the semifinals of the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament at Judy Kelley Morgan Field.
The Gold Nuggets (13-5-1) will play defending champion LSU-Alexandria — fourth seeded but a 3-1 winner against top-seeded LSU-Shreveport in the first semifinal — at 1 p.m. Thursday for the championship and the Red River's second automatic bid to NAIA nationals. LSUS earned the other automatic bid as RRAC regular-season champion.
Samira Roper made it 1-0 XULA in the 18th minute on her header with an assist from Shakiana Dagher. That play started with a Luci Schroeder corner kick. Roper's goal was her 18th, which extended her XULA season record.
Defender Crislyn Gregory scored in the 29th minute — her second consecutive game with a goal and her third goal of the season — to give XULA a 2-0 lead.
Elisa Lopez scored in the 35th minute for the Wildcats (13-5-2).
The second half was scoreless, and that fit the pattern for the Gold Nuggets, who allowed one second-half goal in their last 10 games.
Goalkeeper Theresa Wiesiolek (11-4-1) made seven saves for XULA, five in the first half.
XULA avenged a 1-0 home loss to Louisiana Christian on the final day of the regular season.
XULA is a second-year varsity program that won the RRAC regular season and reached the second round of NAIA nationals in 2023. The Gold Nuggets are 26-11-1 (.697) all-time.
LSUA (12-5-2) trailed 1-0 through 70 minutes, then earned its semifinal victory with two goals by Hille Baumfalk and one by Alexia Bermejo Jo, who put the Generals ahead to stay in the 78th minute. LSUA ended the nine-game unbeaten streak of LSUS (15-4-1).
