COLUMBIA, Ky. —
Jaland Larmond scored the first two goals, and Felix Poschmann assisted on the final three
to lead 25th-ranked Lindsey Wilson in a 4-0 men's soccer victory Saturday against
Xavier University of Louisiana in the second round of NAIA nationals.
The Blue Raiders (10-5-3) advanced to a round-of-16 game Dec. 2 or 3 at Wichita, Kan.,
where the final four rounds will be played. XULA, a second-year varsity program in its
first appearance at nationals, finished 14-5-1.
Both teams had first-round byes.
Larmond became the first opponent
in 16 games to score a first-half goal against XULA. His goals in the 20th and 37th
minutes gave Lindsey Wilson a 2-0 halftime lead.
The Blue Raiders pulled away
with goals from Dominic Ayella in the 49th minute and Sebastian Tregarthen in the 52nd.
Lindsey Wilson became the first team to score more than twice against XULA.
The Gold Rush had only two shots,
none on goal. XULA's
Breno Zanolla made five saves.
It was the final XULA game
for seniors
Julio Gruba,
Leonardo Menzen and
Gustavo Oliveira, all
starters and major contributors to the Gold Rush's record of
25-9-3 (.716) in two seasons.
