METAIRIE, La. — Sophomore newcomer Nasser Benbella scored a school-record three goals Wednesday to lead Xavier University of Louisiana to a 6-0 men's soccer victory against Florida Memorial at Lafreniere Park.
The Gold Rush (1-1) also set program records for goals in a half — it was 5-0 at halftime — and goals in a game. This is XULA's second soccer season.
XULA took control quickly with unassisted goals by Leonardo Menzen and Gustavo Oliveira in the first seven minutes. Benbella scored in the 30th and 41st minutes to make it 4-0, then another newcomer, Thomas Walker, completed the first-half scoring in the 42nd minute.
Benbella scored his record-setting goal in the 61st minute.
Julio Gruba assisted on Benbella's first two goals, and Emilio Peguero and Oliveira also produced assists.
XULA's goalkeepers were Breno Zanolla in the first half and Mauricio Bosco in the second.
XULA will play just once in the next 28 days — 7 p.m. Sept. 7 at NAIA No. 10 Mobile — then open its Red River Athletic Conference schedule Sept. 19 at 3:30 p.m. in Hobbs, N.M., against Southwest.
