SAN ANTONIO, Texas —
Breion Powell produced 23 points and a career-best 14 rebounds Saturday,
and NAIA No. 20 Our Lady of the Lake gained three turnovers in the final 91 seconds
to hold on for a 64-59 Red River Athletic Conference
men's basketball victory against Xavier University of Louisiana.
The Saints (14-4 overall, 10-4 RRAC)
completed a two-game regular-season sweep of the Gold Rush (11-4, 10-3).
Next for XULA will be a 7:30 p.m. Tuesday RRAC game against North American
at the Convocation Center.
XULA never led — there were ties
at 5 and 33 — but got 3-pointers from
Lance Williams and
Jathen Ross
to cut a 57-49 deficit to 60-59 with 1:10 remaining. But XULA committed
turnovers on its final two possessions, and the Saints got clinching baskets from Kenyon Elliott
and Powell.
Seviuhn Turner had 22 points,
six rebounds, six steals and a block for the Gold Rush.
J'Quan Ewing scored 10.
Turner made three 3-pointers, and his steals are the most in a game by a Gold Rush player this season.
XULA's points and 34.4 percent
from the floor were season lows. OLLU outrebounded the Gold Rush 46-29.
XULA remained in second place in the RRAC
but dropped to 2 1/2 games behind LSU-Alexandria, a 63-60 winner at Jarvis Christian.
OLLU took sole possession of third place after Texas A&M-Texarkana lost
120-118 in triple overtime at LSU-Shreveport.
