NEW ORLEANS —
Junior guard Jayden Jackson scored a game- and season-high 24 points Tuesday
to lead North American to a 74-67 Red River Athletic Conference men's
basketball upset of Xavier University of Louisiana.
The Stallions (8-12 overall, 4-11 RRAC)
moved out of a last-place tie in the conference and sent the Gold Rush (11-5, 10-4)
into a second-place tie with Our Lady of the Lake, which was idle.
It was XULA's third consecutive defeat and its first at home in two months.
The Gold Rush will play host to
Huston-Tillotson at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in XULA's Convocation Center.
Jackson entered averaging 2.5 points in 15 games
this season, but he went 9-of-13 from the floor, 2-of-2 on 3-pointers and 4-of-4 from the line
to reach double figures for the first time.
Lance Williams scored 23 points,
Wayne Randall-Bashay a season-high 18
and
James Weathers 15 for the Gold Rush.
Corey Dunning had 13 rebounds and blocked five shots.
Oakley Lewis went 6-of-6 from the line in the final
28.4 seconds for the Stallions. His first attempt — a miss on the front end of a 1-and-1 that XULA rebounded — was nullified
because a XULA player entered the lane too soon. Lewis then converted twice for a 70-65 lead.
North American had a 13-2 advantage in second-half bench scoring.
For the game Stallions reserve Sean Fry scored 17 points, including 3-of-3 3-pointers.
It was the Stallions' first-ever victory against
XULA in five attempts. The Gold Rush won 68-58 Nov. 21 at NAU.
