SAN ANTONIO, Texas —
Antwone Gonzales' 3-pointer at the buzzer from 35 feet Thursday gave
Texas A&M-San Antonio a 73-70 Red River Athletic Conference
men's basketball victory against Xavier University of Louisiana.
The Jaguars (5-12 overall, 4-9 RRAC),
a first-year varsity program, ended their six-game losing streak and
snapped the 11-game win streak of the Gold Rush (11-3, 10-2). XULA remained
in second place in the conference, a game-and-a-half behind LSU-Alexandria, which was idle.
The Gold Rush
will stay in San Antonio and play at 3 p.m. CST Saturday at Our Lady of the Lake,
a 75-69 loser at home to Louisiana Christian. OLLU is tied for third with Texas A&M-Texarkana.
Gonzales scored 26 points and got the winner
after XULA committed a turnover with two seconds remaining.
The teams were tied at 36 at halftime.
There were 16 lead changes, 11 in the second half. XULA led 70-68
on
Lance Williams' layup with 46 seconds remaining, then the Jaguars tied it
on Felix Greif's hook shot in the lane with 30 seconds remaining.
J'Quan Ewing produced season highs of 18 points and nine rebounds
for XULA.
Seviuhn Turner scored 19 points, and Williams had 13.
James Weathers, a 40-point scorer
Tuesday at home against Texas College, scored nine points, seven in the first half.
Journee Phillips, with 22 points, was TAMUT's other double-figure scorer.
The Jaguars outshot XULA 51.2 to 44.4 percent from the floor
and had a 32-26 rebound advantage.
