If there is one thing that is becoming apparent in the early portions of the XULA men's basketball season, it's that the Gold Rush make great halftime adjustments.
For the third time this season, Xavier (3-1) outperformed a foe in the second half to secure a win, this time a 78-72 victory of the Southern University of New Orleans Knights (1-6).
In the season opener, Xavier used a strong second half to break a halftime tie with SUNO. Wednesday night at The Castle, the Gold Rush overcame a 2-point halftime deficit.
Bentravin Phillips paced the XULA offense with 20 points to go along with 4 boards, 4 assists, and 3 steals.
However, it was Seviuhn Turner who showed the most prowess in terms of filling the score sheet. He was good for 19 points and a team-high 8 rebounds, as well as 2 assists and 3 steals.
Junior Leon Williams was the star on defense, blocking 3 shots while scoring 8 points.
Nasir DeGruy, who has scored in double figures in all of the Gold Rush's games, added 16 points.
Next up for XULA will be a return matchup with Loyola, to whom the Gold Rush fell in quadruple overtime in the second game of the season. The game, which will take place in the Convocation Center, is slated for a 7:30 p.m. tip on Tuesday, Nov. 18.
