Gold Rush drop opener; high winds suspend game 2

HOBBS, N.M. — High winds Friday prevented Xavier University of Louisiana and the University of the Southwest from completing their Red River Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader. Southwest won the first game 5-0, and XULA led 9-1 in the top of the fifth inning when the umpires halted the second game.
The Gold Rush (11-24 overall, 8-17 Red River) and Mustangs (23-20, 12-13) will complete their three-game series Saturday, beginning with the suspended game at 10 a.m. MDT.

Game 1
Miguel Olivas (8-4) pitched the Mustangs' second shutout of the season and their first since Jan. 24. Olivas allowed six hits, all singles, walked none and struck out eight. He retired the final 12 batters. David Amaya and Hayden Woods had two RBIs apiece.

Game 2
XULA stung Southwest with three runs apiece in the first and fifth innings, two in the second and one in the fourth. Lawrence Steed hit a two-run single in the first. Cohen Boyd had five RBIs on a sacrifice fly, a double and a bases-loaded triple. XULA starting pitcher Jeremy Clark struck out eight and allowed an unearned run in four innings. The game will resume with two out in the fifth and Boyd on third base.
