Game Recap: Baseball |

Boyd sets 3 XULA records, ties a 4th

HOBBS, N.M. — Cohen Boyd set three Xavier University of Louisiana second-era game records and tied another Saturday during the completion of a Red River Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader at the University of the Southwest.
Boyd, a junior left fielder, set records with two triples, four extra-base hits and 12 total bases, and he tied the XULA mark of seven RBIs.
Despite Boyd's performance, Southwest rallied from 9-1 and 14-10 deficits for a 16-14 victory — the game was suspended Friday because of high winds — then completed the three-game sweep with a 15-5 mercy-rule decision.
XULA will conclude the regular season with four games next week: 6 p.m. Wednesday at city rival SUNO (Wesley Barrow Stadium), then a three-game conference home series at Skelly-Rupp Stadium against Our Lady of the Lake: 5 p.m. Friday, then a noon Saturday doubleheader.
It was Boyd's first game at XULA with multiple extra-base hits. Boyd joined D'Aires Davis — who did it three times — and Deionte Norris as the only Gold Rush players to hit a triple and a home run in the same game.
Southwest scored six runs in the eighth inning to win the suspended game — Sage Bonner doubled home Timrod Sedillo with the go-ahead run — then got three RBIs apiece from Hayden Woods and Adrian Mata to complete the sweep.
Boyd for the series reached base safely nine times. Boyd and Miles Peterson scored four times apiece, Lawrence Steed had four RBIs, and Alan Velez, Cam Finn, Jayden Smith and Alex Crews had three hits apiece.
XULA's second era of baseball began in 2021. Anyone with notable performances from the first era, which ended in 1960, can email them to publicist Ed Cassiere:  ecassier@xula.edu.
