Gold Nuggets open with 3-set victory

        NEW ORLEANS — Sydney Murray hit .321 with 15 kills and two aces Friday to lead Xavier University of Louisiana to a 25-21, 25-14, 25-22 women's volleyball victory against the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma in the season-opening Wolf Pack Welcome tournament.
        The Den of city rival Loyola is the tournament venue.
        Kamea Uitenham had six kills, four aces, seven digs and two blocks for the Gold Nuggets. Kennedy Campbell and Laila Person had five kills apiece, and redshirt freshman Michaela Clayton — in her XULA debut after sitting out 2024 because of injury — had 12 digs.
        Campbell, Taylor Parker and Kendall Evans had three blocks apiece. Charity Metcalf had 18 assists and six digs, and Felise Jones had 14 assists.
        Jaliyah Cox had eight kills and Jayla Blake seven for USAO.
        XULA scored the final five points of the first set, built an 18-6 lead in the second set and erased a 16-15 deficit in the third.
        XULA outhit the Drovers .216 to .061 and produced advantages of 36-32 in kills, 6-2 in aces, 8-5 in blocks and 34-30 in digs.
