NEW ORLEANS - The Gold Rush took a tough loss here Tuesday night, dropping a 69-63 conference decision to in-state opponent LSU-Alexandia.
Xavier (9-5, 6-3 RRAC) was always in the game and shot a respectable 41 percent from the field, but the Generals (10-6, 7-3 RRAC) made a small number more free throws and 3-pointers to hold onto a slim lead at game's end.Â
The loss overshadowed an incredible effort by senior guard Bentravin Phillips, who scored 27 points on 7-for-14 shooting in the field and an impressive 10-for-11 at the free-throw line.Â
Junior center Jamal Gibson had another solid night as well, scoring 10 points and pulling 8 rebounds.Â
XULA will be on the road for its next four contests, all Red River Athletic Conference games. Next up is a Thursday visit to Hawkins, Texas, for a showdown with Jarvis Christian. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
