Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

XULA overcomes early setbacks to force tie against Blue Mountain

The Xavier men's soccer team had every reason to pack it in after a rough first half and early second half in their Thursday match against Blue Mountain Christian in Mississippi. However, the Gold Rush showed their mettle in surging back from a two-goal deficit to register a hard-earned point and a 2-2 tie.

XULA (7-4-2, 5-2-2 SSAC) faced a spirited effort from Blue Mountain (5-4-4, 2-3-2 SSAC), which got off 17 shots and 8 shots on goal. By comparison, Xavier got off 12 shots, 3 of which were on goal.

The Gold Rush fell behind in the 10th minute, when the Toppers scored on a volley inside the box.

Blue Mountain added another goal in the 47th minute, but XULA showed its fighting spirit and rallied to get on the board in the 55th minute when Benjamin Iglesias finished a Felipe Braga ball that ricocheted off the post.

Artur Rubim provided the equalizer in the 67th minute with an assist from Antonio Merola.

Goalie Lenno Schmidt worked the complete game, earning a tie after making 6 saves.

XULA returns to action Saturday at 4 p.m. with a visit to Pulaski, Tennessee, and UT Southern, a team that was recently ranked in the NAIA Top 25. The following week, Xavier will wrap its regular season with a visit to No. 19 William Carey.
