Xavier earns major SSAC win on road against UT Southern

PULASKI, Tenn. - The Gold Rush earned a key road win and broke a team record Saturday, outdueling formerly ranked UT Southern for a 3-2 victory in Southern States Athletic Conference play.

XULA (8-4-2, 6-2-2) scored the fastest goal in program history to take the early lead. With just 1:14 of game time having expired, Diego Larralde buried a pass from Felipe Braga.

Coincidentally, Braga was the previous owner of the fastest-goal record, having scored at the 2:22 mark of a match against Point just last week.

UT Southern (8-5-1, 4-5 SSAC) scored an equalizer in the 17th minute, but Xavier provided an answer in the 22nd minute when João Pedro scored his first goal of the season thanks to an assist from Ellison Hayes.

Hayes delivered the game-winner in the 57th minute with an assist from Cole Spady, and the Gold Rust warded off a comeback attempt from the Firehawks late to secure the win.

Keeper Lenno Schmidt got the win after working the entire game and making 4 saves.

Xavier will remain on the road for its next contest, a visit to No. 19 William Carey on Oct. 24. Match time is scheduled for 4 p.m.

This will be the final regular-season match for the Gold Rush, but there is more season to come.  XULA, which currently sits in third place in the SSAC, has already qualified for the Southern States Athletic Conference tournament, and is a strong contender for an NAIA national tournament berth.
