Gold Nuggets end regular season with 4-1 win over Thomas

METAIRIE, La. - The Gold Nuggets finished their regular season on a strong note here Tuesday afternoon, defeating Thomas 4-1 in Southern States Athletic Conference play.

Xavier (11-4-2, 10-2-1 SSAC) was initially scheduled to play the Night Hawks (9-5-3, 7-4-2 SSAC) in mid-September, but severe weather in New Orleans forced a rescheduling.

On Tuesday, the first half belonged to XULA, which got on the board first with an 18th-minute goal from Eduarda Queiroz with an assist from Maureen Owusu.

Anita Roese scored the game-winner in the 55th minute thanks to an assist from Queiroz and, after Thomas picked up a goal in the 83rd minute, Shakiana Dagher scored on an assist by Alina Paiz in the 88th minute to solidify the win.

Quieroz put an exclamation mark on both the match and her day with a second goal, this one in the 89th minute with an assist from Julia Gurgel.

All told, the Gold Nuggets took 24 shots, 14 of which were on goal, while limiting Thomas to 5 total shots and 3 shots on goal. Keeper Aylin Yildirim got the win, making a pair of saves in the effort.

The game represented the regular-season finale for both squads, but there is more soccer to be played.

Xavier will enter the SSAC Tournament and host an opening-round game Friday at 1 p.m. in Lafreniere Park. The Gold Nuggets' opponent will be either Thomas or Dalton State, depending on the results of a match between Life and Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College later on Tuesday.
