Gold Rush score 3 second-half goals to topple Andrew in SSAC play

METAIRIE, La. - The  Xavier men's soccer team orchestrated a comeback for the ages here Thursday, erasing a 2-0 deficit and eventually claiming a late, 3-2 win over Andrew College in SSAC play.

Andrew (2-10, 0-5 SSAC) scored goals in the 10th and 24th minutes to put the Gold Rush (6-4-1, 4-2-1 SSAC) at the half, but Xavier showed its character in keeping up the effort and pressure until the momentum swung squarely to the home team.

XULA gave the fans a moment to remember by scoring the game-winning goal with just 11 seconds to play.

Sophomore striker Cole Spady, who scored his second brace of the season, put the game away with an assist from Andres Santos.

Spady was the key spark for the Gold Rush. He also got Xavier on the board in the 49th minute with an assist from Ellison Haynes, then assisted on the game-tying goal, which was scored by Bruno Abdallah 78th minute.

Defensively, XULA did a wonderful job of limiting Andrew's opportunities. The Tigers finished with just 6 shots, 2 of which were on goal.

The Xavier attack played a big role in stemming Andrew's momentum. The Gold Rush got off 30 total shots, 15 of which were on goal.

Goalkeeper Lenno Schmidt picked up the win.

Barring any last-minute changes necessitated by the approach of Hurricane Isaias to the Gulf Coast, Xavier's next match will be a Senior Day match against Point on Saturday at 1 p.m.
