PENSACOLA, Fla. - The XULA women's tennis team faces a tough early-season test in the Florida Panhandle Sunday, falling 7-0 to West Florida, one of the better teams in NCAA Division II.Â
Xavier (0-2) did not go quietly against West Florida, which starts its season ranked No. 6 in the nation among D2 women's teams.
Maja Brnic, playing as Xavier's No. 1 after a late scratch, won a set against Carlota Verdu but fell 1-6, 7-5, 3-6.Â
McKenna Wheatley, playing at No. 2 thanks to Brnic's move up, 6-7, 6-7 to Aline Midori Da Silva in a match with a second set featuring six tiebreak points.Â
Anais Yakan overcame an early 1-6 setback to Guadalupe Martinez, to put up a respectable showing in a 5-7 loss in the second set.Â
Brnic and Wheatley had the best showing in doubles, falling 5-7 to Verdu and Sandra Recuenco.Â
Ana Sabikova and Makai Sales fell 3-6 to Martinez and Midori.
The Gold Nuggets return home for their next match, a noon showdown with crosstown rival Loyola-New Orleans on Tuesday.Â
