NEW ORLEANS - The Gold Rush suffered a nonconference, midweek loss to John Melvin Tuesday night, falling 14-3 at Skelly-Rupp Stadium.
The game was a disappointment, but was nonetheless encouraging as Xavier, which struggled offensively against defending NAIA national champion LSU-Shreveport last weekend, was able to get its bats going.
Utility player Brad Sigler, who logged time at both second base and in right field, and center fielder Cohen Boyd each went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Another big performer on the night was Chase DeLoach, who played in reserve and went 1-for-1 with an RBI single as well as an RBI sacrifice fly.
Left fielder Jayden Smith, who also pitched, went 1-for-2 with a run scored.
The Gold Rush pitching staff got a solid performance out of Lawrence Steed, who worked 2 and 2/3s innings in relief and struck out 4 while allowing just one run.
XULA's next three games will be a return to Red River Conference action with a home series against Texas College. The Gold Rush and Steers will play a single, nine-inning game Friday at 6, and follow with a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 2 p.m.
