JACKSON, Miss. - The Gold Nuggets were close to a second consecutive win over an NCAA Division I team, but ultimately fell 4-1 to Jackson State in a match that was much closer than the score indicates.
Asadah Ma'at scored the lone point of the day for Xavier (5-4), defeating Tiara Alvarez 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6, but several other players acquitted themselves well.
Maja Brnic had split the first two sets of her No. 1 match against Paula Corbalan when the contest was halted after Jackson State secured the win.
Similarly, Laura Lopez and Valeria Ortega were leading their No. 3 doubles match when the Tigers earned the point in that category.
Next up for Xavier will be back-to-back home battles against teams in the NAIA Top 25. The first of those contests is Friday at 1 p.m. against in-city rival and No. 16 Dillard.
