VICTORIA, Texas - The Xavier softball team continues to show flashes of incredible skill, but Saturday, the Gold Nuggets fell in both halves of a conference doubleheader against Texas A&M Victoria, a team receiving votes in the NAIA poll.
In the first game, XULA (5-17, 2-9 RRAC) got off to a hot start but couldn't hold off a fierce comeback by Texas A&M Victoria (16-10, 7-4 RRAC).
The Gold Nuggets scored 4 runs over the first three innings, but the Jaguars eventually won 9-4.
Three XULA players had strong performances at the plate, with third baseman Lexi McLin having the best showing with 2-for-3 batting to go along with 2 RBI and a double.
Shortstop Amaya Williams went 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored, while catcher Amireeya Malveaux went 1-for-3 with 2 RBI.
Morgan Malveaux (3-5) took the loss, working 5 innings and striking out 2.
The second game, which A&M Victoria ultimately won 4-2, was quite the defensive struggle for most of its duration, with Xavier trailing 1-0 entering the bottom of the sixth.
However, the Jaguars scored 3 runs in their half of the inning, and Xavier's spirited attempt at a comeback fell a bit short in the seventh.
McLin was the star, going 1-for-3 with a 2-run home run in the top of the seventh.
Bella Rivera (2-5) took the loss, working 5 innings and striking out a pair of batters. Williams and Morgan Malveaux added a double apiece in the game.
The series concludes with a single contest at noon.
